It's week #2 of the Read-A-Thon! The weather looks to be beautiful this week and we have lots of sports going on at the moment! As a reminder, if your 6th grader is participating in a sport, they must be eligible! Eligibility runs each week on Monday morning, so make sure your student is completing their work and checking in on their grades!! If your student has questions about late work or grades, now is a great time to ask those questions! This week is the final week of Quarter 3.
With the Read-A-Thon, students are encouraged to sign up (parent's do this!), log their reading time, and earn money! It's all filled out and completed online, with the money going towards our PBIS carts, which started back up last week! Many of our 6th graders still have not been signed up, so they cannot record their minutes! As a reminder, if your student is absent, we will still be updating the 6th grade website daily, as well as providing any videos (if necessary). Information also went out recently about the upcoming change to Mondays. We will start back in person on the final Monday before spring break (next Monday!). The plan is still to get out at 2:20 each day. In science this week, we will be continuing our unit on Weather, finishing up Lesson 2: The Make, which we started last week. This week, students will use what we learned about fronts to create short skips to reteach the class about those fronts. We will also finish the exit ticket for Lesson 2. Any old water cycle work or Lesson 1 weather work should be completed as soon as possible. In math this week, we are starting on Chapter 5, which focuses on multiplying fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals, as well as finding area of non-rectangular shapes. On Monday, students should have completed an equivalent ratio pixel art assignment on Google classroom. On Tuesday, we worked CPM Lesson 5.1.1, which looked at diagrams for multiplying fractions. Wednesday will be spent on CPM Lesson 5.1.2, which is about describing parts of parts (fraction multiplication) with words and diagrams. Then on Thursday, we'll complete CPM Lesson 5.1.3, which explores fraction multiplication without the use of diagrams. Much of our fraction work in this chapter should be review from last year. Math homework for this week:
Thank you for your continued support and have a fantastic week! Ms Kennell

As a reminder, if your student is absent, we will still be updating the 6th grade website daily, as well as providing any videos (if necessary). Information also went out recently about the upcoming change to Mondays. We will continue to be remote (doing video calls) for the next few weeks, but will start back in person on the final Monday before spring break. The plan is still to get out at 2:20 each day. In science this week, we will be continuing our unit on Weather. In it, the students will go through a progression of three inquiry lessons that focus on temperature, pressure, and the corresponding weather patterns. Lesson 2: The Make will begin on Friday. Any old water cycle work or Lesson 1 weather work should be completed as soon as possible. In math this week, we are reviewing our work in chapter four and taking our chapter test. On Monday, students should have completed 9 ratio assignments on Khan Academy. On Tuesday, we worked on an enlarge and reduce figures team test and started a 4.2.4 Des-Farm assignment, which is posted in Google classroom and should be completed (if necessary) for homework. Wednesday will be spent completing a chapter four review packet, as well as checking in about missing work. Then on Thursday, we'll take our chapter four math test. Math homework for this week:
Thank you for your continued support and have a fantastic week! Ms Kennell Somehow we are already in the final week of February! With that in mind, we are also nearing the end of the quarter. If your student has questions about late work or grades, now is a great time to ask those questions! This week we will also be participating in the FFA dress up days, which are posted below.
Students were also asked to tentatively sign up for girls basketball and boys/girls track. 6th graders are welcome (and encouraged) to participate! In science this week, we will be starting our next unit on Weather. In it, the students will go through a progression of three inquiry lessons that focus on temperature, pressure, and the corresponding weather patterns. Lesson 1: The Solve will begin on Friday, which also includes our vocabulary work for this unit. Any old water cycle work should be completed as soon as possible. In math this week, we are continuing our work with ratios that started last week. The plan is to complete lesson 4.2.2 (Enlarging and Reducing Figures) on Tuesday, 4.2.3 (Enlargement and Reduction Ratios) on Wednesday, and 4.2.4 (Ratios in Other Situations) on Thursday. Those will be the final lessons in chapter 4, which means we will be reviewing and taking a test in the early parts of next week. Homework for these three lessons will be on paper again. Math homework for this week:
**This is the last week for our February homework challenge. The students seem to be enjoying the competition! Thank you for your continued support and have a fantastic week! Ms Kennell It's another short week this week! I hope everyone is staying safe after all of the snow and cold weather!
As a reminder, if your student is absent, we will still be updating the 6th grade website daily, as well as providing any videos (if necessary). In science this week, we will be finishing our Water Cycle unit! This week, students will have a few minutes to check in with their group about the project that should have been finished last week. Then, they will present their designs to their homeroom class and take the water cycle unit test on Mosa Mack. We will start a new unit then next week! In math this week, we started the week by reviewing evaluating algebraic expressions, working to follow order of operations to solve expressions with variables. On Wednesday, students completed an escape room and had a Google form for homework. On Thursday, we will begin the second half of chapter 4, which is all about enlarging and reducing figures using ratios. Our first lesson (4.2.1) has us working as a class to enlarge a mystery mascot picture (it's a dragon!). Students will have a homework assignment on Thursday and it will be on paper for everyone, since they will be needing graphing paper. Math homework for this week:
**We started a 6B vs 6K homework challenge for the month of February! Hopefully this will help with some of the late work! Feel free to ask your student about this challenge! Thank you for your continued support and have a wonderful week! Ms Kennell Brr! It's cold out there! I'm so grateful that most of our students were able to stay inside and learn from home today! Shout out to most of our students for joining our video calls and completing assignments on time! Our new homework challenge is probably helping that just a bit. :) Also, if your student didn't mention it yet, we have made a slight schedule adjustment, moving science/SS to the last day of in person learning for the week and switching our video calls on Mondays back to math/ELA. We needed some face time with science/SS and this seemed like the best way to do it. We started this on Friday.
As a reminder, if your student is absent, we will still be updating the 6th grade website daily, as well as providing any videos (if necessary). **Due to all of the restrictions this year, plus the fact that Valentine's Day is on the Sunday of a long weekend, 6th grade has decided to not have a party or pass out any treats this year. In science this week, we will continue to work on our Water Cycle unit! On Friday last week, students worked in their small groups on Lesson 3: The Engineer. They had to choose a state that experiences droughts, complete some research on that state, and are working to build a way to conserve water or create a technical drawing to supply more water. They will be finishing their buildings/drawings this week on Thursday. After those are created, students will be presenting their creations and taking the water cycle assessment (next Friday). In math this week, we started the week by reviewing converting mixed numbers and improper fractions. They should have completed an escape room and a Quizizz assignment during or after our video call today. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be working on lesson 4.1.3 (using variables to generalize), which will take us a couple of days to complete. Thursday is the final day of our week this week, so that will be a science/SS day. The second half of chapter 4 is about ratios and enlargements/reductions, which we will work on next week. Math homework for this week:
**No school this Friday (12th - teacher's institute) or Monday (15th - President's Day). Enjoy the long weekend! Thank you for your continued support and have a wonderful week! Ms Kennell Happy February! As sports begin to take off for some of the 6th graders, make sure students are getting late work completed ASAP and are joining all video calls on Mondays!
Also as a reminder, if your student is absent, we will still be updating the 6th grade website daily, as well as providing any necessary videos (should be posted by 3:30 pm at the latest). In science today, we continued working on our Water Cycle unit! Students should have completed all five steps of the Lesson 2: The Make assignment, where they travelled through the steps of the water cycle, looking at the different ways water travels (not always in the same order/pattern), and analyzing the importance of the different steps. We will continue to work on this unit next Monday. In math this week, we will be starting and finishing the first half of chapter 4, which is all about variables and expressions! Tuesday will be 4.1.1 (introduction to variables), Wednesday will focus on 4.1.2 (writing equivalent expressions), and Thursday will be 4.1.3 (using variables to generalize). On Friday, we will work on writing expressions when given a description using a fun activity! The second half of chapter 4 is about ratios and enlargements/reductions, which we will work on next week. Math homework for this week:
Thank you for your continued support! Have a wonderful week! Ms Kennell Somehow, it's already the last week of January! I have no idea where this month as gone!?! With possible inclement weather tonight/tomorrow, keep an eye out for possible changes to our learning on Tuesday. If we are in person, awesome! If not, we'll see everyone online at 8:30 and 10:30 for our video calls!
As a reminder, if your student is absent, we will still be updating the 6th grade website daily, as well as providing any necessary videos (should be posted by 3:30 pm at the latest). In science today, we continued working on our Water Cycle unit! Students should have completed all five steps of the Lesson 1: The Solve Live Video assignment, where they looked at pollution and how that can impact a lake and the water cycle. We will continue to work on this unit next Monday. In math this week, we will be finishing our work with chapter 3. On Tuesday, we will be completed a review packet in preparation for our test on Wednesday. Thursday will be spent starting the first lesson of chapter 4 (variables and ratios), with a short dividing review on Friday. At this time, students will have homework on Tuesday (study, finish all late work/Khan Academy) and Thursday (4.1.1 Review Preview). If we end up being remote tomorrow, we will do a different review activity on Tuesday, push the review packet and test to Wednesday/Thursday, push the start of chapter 4 to next week, and keep the division review on Friday. Assignments will still be posted digitally through Google classroom (and the 6th grade website), so look there first if you have any questions! Thank you for always being flexible! Thank you for your continued support! Have a fantastic week! Ms Kennell Welcome back to person learning this week! We have had good attendance while remote and cannot wait to see everyone in person tomorrow!
As a reminder, if your student is absent, we will still be updating the 6th grade website daily, as well as providing any necessary videos (should be posted by 3:30 pm at the latest). In science today, we started a new unit - The Water Cycle! We started by identifying some vocabulary words, which students should continue to practice using Quizlet over the coming weeks. Our first lesson focused on a water park mystery and exploring where water comes from, as well as the different kinds/forms of water. All students should have completed the five steps of the Lesson 1: The Solve Animation and copied down the vocabulary for the unit. We will continue with the next lesson during our next set of remote Monday calls. In math this week, we will be continuing to review converting between fractions, decimals, and percents with an escape room and Khan Academy assignments. On Wednesday, we will complete the winter Aimsweb benchmark testing, then exploring a number line flip activity, which will lead into the final half of chapter 3, which is all about integers, absolute value, and coordinate graphing. We will be covering CPM Lesson 3.2.1 (Addition, Subtraction, and Opposites) on Thursday and CPM Lesson 3.2.2 (Locating Negative Numbers) on Friday. After that, there are only two more new lessons for this chapter, along with some review concepts, so we will be finished with this chapter and ready for a review/test the end of the month. Thank you for your continued support! Have a wonderful week! Ms Kennell Welcome back! We hope everyone had a restful and relaxing break. We are so excited to get back into a routine here in Quarter 3! As a reminder, we will be remote this week (Tuesday, January 5 through Friday, January 8) and will have live class periods via Google meet links. Next week, we will jump back into our “regular” schedule, with remote live lessons on Mondays and in person learning Tuesdays-Fridays.
Since we are only going to be remote this week, there will NOT be a material pick up for 6th graders at this time. Instead, all work will be supplied electronically for this week. During our remote days (this week and all Mondays), students will have video call times from 8:30-9:30 and 10:30-11:30 with their 6th grade teachers. This week only, they will also be completing video calls with Mr Barton from 1:30-2:00 and art/guidance calls once a week from 9:45-10:15 (Wed/Fri). The specials calls do not take place on Mondays. A table schedule was also emailed out again for your reference. Since teachers will be providing instruction during those video calls, students are expected to join and participate for the entire session. If students are absent during the call for any reason (or absent on an in person day), they are expected to watch the video recording of the lesson, which is posted by 3:30 pm each day. These videos take the place of the in class instruction if it is missed and are not optional. This will continue until further notice. During remote days, students should start by checking the 6th grade website to see their assignments for the day, then be prepared to join each of the Google meets on time. Links to the meets will be provided on the 6th grade website as much as possible. During the meets, students will be working on classwork with their various teachers. Students will have work to complete outside of the scheduled video calls as well. For this week, our focus will be math and ELA, which will continue to be the focus during our in person days. However, we will be starting science and social studies again this quarter, which will be the focus on Mondays. Since that will be the only material posted for Mondays, students could have up to 2-3 hours of both science and social studies work on those days, as well as PE and any late work. Grades can be checked at any time on Skyward by either the parent or the student. In math this week, we will be doing a quick review of the last couple of weeks of Quarter 2, working on some percent assignments on Khan Academy, completing a creative math assignment related to 2021, and reviewing/practicing adding and subtracting fractions. Next week (in person), we will be completing our winter benchmark assessment and starting the last section of chapter 3 (integers). We will explore positive and negative numbers, their placement and relationships on a number line, absolute value, and coordinate graphing on a four quadrant grid. Thank you for your continued support as we begin the second half of the school year! Have a fantastic week! Ms Kennell So far, we are still in person! This final week before Christmas break, we will be wrapping up units, checking in on late work, and doing our best to continue learning, no matter where we are! As a reminder, if your student has to be out during this week, the 6th grade website will still be updated and recordings of the lessons will be posted after school each day. Students who are absent for any reason are expected to watch the recordings before completing the assignments for the day. As always, if you have questions, please reach out!
For math this week, we are finishing our work on representing portions (parts of a whole) using fractions, decimals, and percents (and occasionally word form). Since some students are in person and some are still remote, our lesson work will still take place on Jamboards, which are posted each morning. For the homework assignments, students will have the option to complete them on paper or a Jamboard. Fully remote students will complete the assignments electronically (Jamboard). This week, will are working on lessons 3.1.5, and 3.1.6, as well as a mid-unit check in during class on Thursday. Students will have homework on Tuesday (3.1.5 Review Preview) and Wednesday (3.1.6 Review Preview), with the expectation that they are also completing any necessary late work (check Skyward and Google Classroom). In addition, students were given some Khan Academy assignments a couple of weeks ago over Greatest Common Factor. These are due this week (Thursday). Students who were not finished with them yet on Monday received an email reminder as well. As a reminder, all work for Quarter 3 should be submitted before break (Friday, Dec 18). Since our primary focus is math and ELA right now, we are not pushing out new science and social studies materials. Because of this, if students wish to raise those grades, they will need to email their teacher about redoing individual assignments. Thank you for your help and support as we work on continuing our education in person or remotely. If you have any questions, please reach out! Have a wonderful week! Ms Kennell |
