Happy Halloween week! It's also the first week of parent teacher conferences. Quarter 2 has begun, with grades starting to add up and eligibility starting this week for those in sports. Students will be getting report cards sent home during parent teacher conferences, along with a variety of other testing paperwork. Please encourage your student to come with you to your conference time. If you have yet to sign up for a conference, please contact their homeroom teacher as soon as possible. Last week's Classcraft challenge was a success! It was encouraging to see students work hard to earn that reward. Mr. Lowery's class won the challenge, but it was very close! We are working on rewards for individual students for leveling up, as well as working on determining what our next challenge will be.
In math this week, we are finishing our work on multiplying fractions, which includes multiplying mixed numbers, focusing on using diagrams to explain why the standard algorithm works. Next week, we will begin working on strategies for dividing fractions. Students will have homework Monday (5.1.2 review preview), Tuesday (5.1.3 review preview), and Thursday (5.1.4 review preview). In social studies, our focus for the week is exploring the four empires of Mesopotamia. We will spend the entire week on this lesson, with homework assignments to finish any notebook pages we did not finish in class. This is our last lesson over Mesopotamia, so we will be reviewing and taking a test over Mesopotamia next week. In spelling, we are doing some work outside of class with our spelling while we focus on circles during class time. We will be working on finishing our list and taking our test next week. Students will be asked to do some spelling homework this week. Upcoming dates:
Have a great week! Ms. Kennell

Somehow, we are already at the beginning of Quarter 2! Time is flying this year! This week, students will be getting report cards sent home (Friday), we have box tops due (also Friday), and we are working on a Classcraft challenge! As a homeroom, we are competing this week against the other 6th grade homerooms to see which class can earn the most XP points! Students will earn the points individually and as a class, with the average per student at the end of the week determining the winning homeroom! 1st place prize is donuts, XP, and gold pieces, 2nd place earns XP and gold pieces, and 3rd place will earn nothing extra. We are hoping that this challenge will lead to an amazing week!
In math this week, we are finishing our work with the Giant One and moving on to multiplying fractions. Students will have homework on multiplying fractions either Wednesday or Thursday this week, with the possibility of a review assignment as well. In social studies, our focus for the week is Ancient Sumer and what characteristics are needed to be called a civilization. We will spend the entire week on this lesson, with homework assignments to finish any notebook pages we did not finish in class. In spelling, my homeroom is taking a test today, with a new list coming later this week. We will continue with activities we have used in the past, while also taking some spelling time to work on behaviors and circles. Our test will not take place until the end of next week at the earliest. Upcoming dates:
Have a fabulous week! Ms. Kennell It's the final week of quarter one! Please remember to be checking with your student each day about their homework assignments. As a reminder, students can and should complete late assignments up until the final week of the quarter.
In math this week, we are starting our work on fractions, using the concept of the Giant One to make equivalent fractions. Ask your student to teach you about the Giant One! Students have homework on Monday (2.3.4 Review Preview) and either Wednesday or Thursday (3.1.1 Review Preview). In social studies, we are reviewing the first four lessons about Mesopotamia, focusing on vocabulary! Students will have two assignments this week (Monday - crossword, Tuesday - multiple choice questions). Afterwards, we will be looking at Sumer and what characteristics make up a civilization. In spelling, we are continuing our new lists. Students are working on sorts, rainbow words, and ABC sorts, and will have their test on Monday of next week. Upcoming dates:
Have a great week! Ms. Kennell Happy homecoming week! It's a crazy, short week! This week, your student should be bringing you a form about what they should do on Friday following the pep rally at the high school. All forms are due back on Thursday! We will also be participating in the Knight Walk here in Mansfield on Friday. Please remember to be checking with your student each day about their homework assignments. As a reminder, students can and should complete late assignments up until the final week of the quarter.
In math this week, we are continuing to work on multiplying multi-digit numbers using generic rectangles, but adding in the concept of greatest common factor. Students have homework on Tuesday (Review packet) and Wednesday (2.3.3 review preview). In social studies, we are learning about the first city-states in Mesopotamia, focusing on how and why those developed in that area. We will be finishing TCI Lesson 4 this week, with some unit review on Friday and Monday of next week. In spelling, we started new lists this week. Students are working on sorts, rainbow words, and ABC sorts, and will have their test the end of next week. Upcoming dates:
Have a fabulous week! Ms. Kennell Welcome to October! The fall weather is starting to show up, so make sure to send your students to school in layers! This is another short week, thanks to a Teacher's Institute Day on Friday, with no school next Monday as well because of Columbus Day. Enjoy your four day weekend! Last week, we completed our benchmark testing for interventions and this week we will begin our groups! Please remember to be checking with your student each day about their homework assignments. As a reminder, students can and should complete late assignments up until the final week of the quarter.
In math this week, we will be continuing our work with using generic rectangles to multiply whole numbers. At this time, students should be using this method instead of the standard algorithm, as it connects to our learning later in this unit. Students will have two assignments this week (Monday - Generic Rectangle WS and Tuesday - 2.3.2 Review Preview). In social studies, we are finishing TCI Lesson 3 - From Hunters and Gatherers to Farmers, and beginning Lesson 4 - The Rise of Sumerian City-States. We will be spending Monday and Tuesday reviewing our notes for Lesson 3 and then students will be using their notes to create a comic strip in ELA (this will count as an ELA and SS grade). Each evening, students should finish the section notes in their notebook if they did not finish them in class or if they were absent. Spelling this week is the end of our current lists! Students are finishing an ABC sort and taking a spelling test (Wednesday). New words will be given out either on Thursday or Tuesday of next week. Students should be making sure they have all of their sorts finished and that they are ready for the test! Upcoming dates:
