It's week 7 of our school year already and the final week in September!
As a reminder, students who are absent for any reason (quarantined, appointments, sick, etc.) should check out the 6th Grade Google Site each day and complete the posted activities. Grades are being updated regularly and some students are starting to have more missing assignments. As a reminder, Skyward/Q will give you access to your student's grades at any time. We are approaching the final few weeks of the quarter, so now is the time to make sure students are all caught up! This week in math, we are finishing our work with area and perimeter, using Base 10 blocks to help with some exploration. We will also be starting some multiplication work, using a tool called a Generic Rectangle (area model). Feel free to ask your student to tell you all about it!! At the end of this post, there will be a list of the homework that is expected to be completed throughout the week. Check it out! This week in science, we'll be finishing our Design Thinking unit by completing the last steps of Lesson 3: The Engineer, in which students have been working to build something to save Dullis the sloth from a pit of alligators. After finishing our designs and testing them, students will be completing a couple of questions online and then making a comic to show their design thinking process. On Friday, we will finish the unit by taking a test on Mosa Mack, which students will be able to use their notes for, if they wish. Next week, we'll start our next unit! Math/Science homework this week:
If you have any questions, please reach out and let us know! Let's have an wonderful week! Ms Kennell

This school year has already gotten off to a crazy, sometimes rough start! We are entering into week 5, and I apologize that I didn't have a second post before this one! We were hit hard with quarantine students and have been trying to find a routine that works for everyone. As previously mentioned on Classtag, students who are out of school for any reason should check out the 6th Grade Google Site and complete the posted activities. Ms Brutlag and I are both moving away from a lot of live meets, but we are happy to help as much as we can! Students can email questions or request a quick private meet, which we could usually do after school or during our prep the next morning. Grades are also being updated and some students are starting to have more missing assignments. As a reminder, Skyward/Q will give you access to your student's grades at any time. The last couple of general reminders for this post are about masks and chromebooks. Parents, please check in with your student about how to wear a mask properly and if their mask is working for them. We do have a few students still struggling to keep them up, over their nose, and out of their mouth while working. Finally, chromebooks should be charged on a regular basis at home. Some students are only charging them at school, which is creating a safety hazard with the cords and social distancing. They have the newest chromebooks, so they should not need charging every day, unless a student is using it a lot at home. Thank you!!
This week in math, we will be completing our first CPM chapter with some review and our first big math test! On Monday, students will be completing a prime factorization team quiz, as well as the 1.2.3 Review Preview homework assignment. On Tuesday, we will work through a chapter 1 review packet, with our individual test for chapter 1 coming on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday this week will be spent working on the first two lessons in chapter 2, which are all about analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of various graphical representations of data! The second section of the chapter focuses more specifically on area and perimeter relationships, using correct units, and calculating area of less regular shapes, which will be our primary focus next week. This week in science, we'll be continuing with our Design Thinking unit by completing Lesson 2: The Lab on Mosa Mack. In this lesson, we will be looking at a variety of innovations from history and evaluating if the creators used all of the steps in the design thinking process correctly and effectively. If we decide that they did not, it will be our job to determine where the mistake occurred, as well as what could have been done differently. Next week, we'll start working through Lesson 3: The Engineer, where we will again use the design thinking process steps as a team to create a way to save Dullis the sloth from alligators! It should be a fun couple of weeks! If you have any questions, please reach out and let us know! Let's stay safe and have an excellent week! Ms Kennell |
