Even though most people dislike February (probably because it's usually cold and dreary), it's one of my favorite months! I love the month leading up to my birthday (February 25) and try to fit in small celebrations all month long! With February starting later this week, we are flying through Quarter 3!
In math, we are finishing unit rates this week, with our test over ratios, rates, and percents this Thursday, February 1. Students received a half sheet study guide on Friday, as well as their final homework assignment for this unit (7.1.3 Review/Preview), which is due on Tuesday. In social studies, we are getting a new map today (South America) and learning some cool facts about the area. The rest of the week, we will be covering some final topics related to Ancient China. In spelling, we have all taken our spelling tests and received our new lists. Students will be working on a variety of sorts with their groups before taking spelling tests on those, which will start in a couple weeks. Upcoming dates:

Here we are, in our final full week of January! And it's a full school week to boot! Sickness is taking over our classroom, so please encourage your students to wash their hands frequently and get plenty of rest!
In math, we are finishing up rates this week, with review materials and a test over rates, ratios, and percents coming up next week. The exact date will be announced via Remind and to students once a firm date has been determined. In social studies, we are continuing to learn about Ancient China. So far, we have focused on the geography, philosophies, and we will be looking into some specific dynasties/emperors and inventions this week. Friday, we will have a map quiz, which will cover Africa, as well as old map materials. Students should be studying their maps for this quiz (in their 5 subject notebook). In spelling, we are finishing up a word list this week. All groups will be taking a spelling test and getting a new word list, as well as grades for the previous sorts in their notebooks. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send me an email, note, or Remind message! Have a great week! We are falling back into a routine! We had no school yesterday for Martin Luther King, Jr. day, and so this week is a four day school week.
In math, we are finishing up transitioning between fractions, decimals, and percents, and beginning rates and comparing rates later this week. In social studies, we are continuing to learn about Ancient China, the geography of China, and are working on a map of Africa. We will have a map quiz over Africa next Friday (January 26). In spelling, students are working on the new word lists they began last week, with the last couple of groups meeting with Ms Kennell this week, before beginning spelling tests. Upcoming dates:
It's still hard for me to believe that it is 2018! While I'm glad for the fresh start that always seems to come with the new year, I am also shocked by how quickly the year has flown by! Report cards for quarter two were sent home on Friday with students.
In math, we are starting our work on rates and unit rates, which is our last topic before the end of the unit. This week, we will be working on CPM lessons 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 review preview, as well as reviewing our topics from the entire year. In social studies, we reviewed our old maps from last semester and will be retaking a map quiz from last semester on Friday. Students should study the maps in their notebook for the quiz. The rest of the week will be spent starting China, which is our next ancient civilization. In spelling, we received our new spelling lists today and made our new cards for sorting. We will be getting in our groups and starting our first sorts tomorrow. As always, if you have any questions, please send me an email! ~Ms Kennell [email protected] Upcoming dates:
