Happy Monday and happy Thanksgiving week! Since it looks like we will be remote for at least one more week after Thanksgiving, I want to go back to a style that is more similar to my older posts, while still including some of the remote reminders. As always, if you have questions, please reach out!
As announced by the district earlier this morning, we are remote this week and next week for sure, with our first possible day of in person learning coming Tuesday, December 8. There will be another materials pickup next Monday (November 30). You will be receiving an email from the school, as well as the 6th grade teachers, if your 6th grader has work to pick up. If there are materials to pick up, please do so on Monday, since the students will need those materials in order to successfully continue their online learning. As a reminder, if students have paper copies of work that need to be turned in, those can be dropped off at the school or sent via email. As another reminder, students should be in video calls every day (Monday-Friday). The times with their 6th grade teachers are 8:30-9:30 and 10:30-11:30, PE is from 1:30-2:00, and Guidance/Art are Wednesday and Friday from 9:45-10:15. As remote learning continues, we are ending up with less students on the calls, which is going to negatively impact their grade, since they are missing their core instruction. Videos, while better than nothing, do not replace the on screen time with the teacher. Since teachers will be providing instruction during those video calls, it is important for every student to join the call and participate for the entire session. Their attendance and participation in the call also counts toward their daily attendance. If there's a reason why your student will not be in the call or will miss part of the call, an email would be great! If your student has to miss a video call due to an appointment, we are posting short recordings on either the 6th grade website or Google classroom, though those videos are not up until later in the afternoon. Students who miss the class calls are still expected to complete the daily assignments and watch the recordings. During our days, students should start by checking the 6th grade website to see their assignments for the day, then be prepared to join each of the Google meets on time. Interventions also started last week, so students should have some math/reading to complete for interventions independently. Grades can be checked at any time on Skyward by either the parent or the student. For math this week, we are completing a review packet over chapter two, as well as some themed review in honor of Thankgsiving. Next week, we will have one more review day, then be taking our test electronically over chapter two. It is very important that students are online during our call on Tuesday, since it will be a test day. After that, we will be moving on to our next chapter in math. Since our primary focus is math and ELA right now, we are not pushing out new science and social studies materials. Because of this, if students wish to raise those grades, they will need to email their teacher about redoing individual assignments. Thank you for your help and support as we work on continuing our education remotely. If you have any questions, please reach out! Happy Thanksgiving! Ms Kennell

Happy Tuesday! Similar to my post last week, I want to keep this one as short as possible, since we all have so much going on with our remote learning changes. For updates about math resources, etc., please look back at previous posts!
As of right now (which could change at any moment), we will continue to be remote through Thanksgiving break. ALL students had work to pick up last Wednesday (Nov 11) and Monday (Nov 16). If you did not pick up work both of those days for your student, please make a plan to come in and get that work. If students have paper copies of work that need to be turned in, those can be dropped off at the school as well. As a reminder, students should be in video calls every day (Monday-Friday). The times with their 6th grade teachers are 8:30-9:30 and 10:30-11:30, PE is from 1:30-2:00, and Guidance/Art are Wednesday and Friday from 9:45-10:15. During our days, students should start by checking the 6th grade website to see their assignments for the day, then be prepared to join each of the Google meets on time. Links to the meets will be provided on the 6th grade website as much as possible. During the meets, students will be working on classwork with their various teachers. Students may have work to complete outside of the scheduled video calls. Our primary focus will be math and ELA, though students should continue to work on late work and corrections for all of their subjects. We also started interventions this week, so students should have some math/reading to complete for interventions independently. Grades can be checked at any time on Skyward by either the parent or the student. Students or parents/guardians will also need to submit daily attendance, which can be found in the banner on the district website. This must be completed each day that we are remote. Thank you for your help and support as we work on continuing our education remotely. If you have any questions, please reach out! Ms Kennell and Ms Brutlag This post will be a little different than my normal posts. For updates about math resources, etc., please look back at my last post! Instead, this one will be about our transition back to remote learning. We are currently scheduled to be remote until November 24, which takes us up to Thanksgiving break.
Students will begin their remote work tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov 11) and we will be following a similar video call schedule as the previous session of remote learning. As a reminder, those video call times were 8:30-9:30 and 10:30-11:30. This time, students will also be completing video calls daily with Mr Barton from 1:30-2:00, as well as art/guidance calls once a week from 9:45-10:15. A table schedule was also included in my parent email. Since teachers will be providing instruction during those video calls, it is important for every student to join the call and participate for the entire session. During our days, students should start by checking the 6th grade website to see their assignments for the day, then be prepared to join each of the Google meets on time. There will be opportunities for supply drop off and pick up tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov 11) and next Monday (Nov 16) from 8:00-3:30. All 6th grade students have something to pick up, and any paper copies of homework, late work, or corrections should be brought back to school during that time. Thank you for your continued support as we jump back into remote learning! If you have questions, please reach out! Ms Kennell and Ms Brutlag Welcome back to four days of in person learning! It was definitely different having everyone here at the same time, but we will adjust! It almost felt like a first day of school all over again!
Make sure you are checking in on your student's progress and following Blue Ridge information using the app! Check out some reminders (mostly review) and updates about what we are learning below! As a reminder, students are still expected to check the 6th grade website every day that they are remote, which is currently just Mondays. Grades are also up to date. All students should have their own student access to Skyward/Q to check their grades, so they can pull those up anytime! It is harder to keep track of work while going back and forth on in person and remote days, so it's especially important that students are checking emails, Skyward/Q, the website, and folders to make sure they are getting credit for all of their work! Quarter 2 is off to a quick start, so check out those grades and stay all caught up with those assignments! In math this week, we are continuing to work on area, but now looking at how area and base ten blocks connect with the area model for multiplication that they learned in 5th grade. We will use this same method, but CPM calls it the generic rectangle, since we will use it to multiply a variety of types of numbers this year. We are also spending some time reviewing prime and composite numbers and prime factorization. On Wednesday, we worked on a prime factorization escape room. On Thursday, we will work through CPM Lesson 2.3.1. Then on Friday, we will review prime factorization a little more, as well as area/perimeter of composite figures. Math Homework for this week:
In science, students should have completed the 13 vocabulary words in their notebooks from last Monday, as well as all old Mosa Mack work. We will be moving on to the Scientific Method/CER Unit next Monday. There is a Quizlet activity for them on Google classroom, which they can use to practice the words! They will need to sign up for an account in order to access all of the words and activities. General Updates:
