Here we are in the final week of September already! It's a short one, thanks to the School Improvement Day on Monday, but it will be busy! Last week, we completed our benchmark testing for interventions. This year, we are using AimsWeb Plus, which is almost entirely online, with some different assessments than in previous years. So far, the data looks accurate and helpful, so we should be ready to start intervention groups either by the end of this week or beginning of this week (hopefully!). Just a few 6th grade students need to complete the benchmark testing still. Also, please remember to be checking with your student each day about their homework assignments. As a reminder, students can and should complete late assignments up until the final week of the quarter. Like I always tell the students, any grade is better than a zero in the gradebook!
In math this week, we will be finishing our work with area and perimeter, taking a look at some irregular shapes and how we can separate those into rectangles to determine area. We will also be using our knowledge of area to start working on multiplying, specifically looking at how we can maximize our products and use a generic rectangle area model to represent multiplication of multi-digit numbers. Students will have two assignments this week (Tuesday - 2.2.3 Review Preview and Thursday - either 2.3.1 Review Preview or a general review worksheet). In social studies, we are progressing to TCI Lesson 3 - From Hunters and Gatherers to Farmers. We are going to be exploring how the development of agriculture changed the daily life in the Neolithic Age, focusing on the transitions from the Old Stone Age to the New Stone Age and how people created a stable food supply, made permanent shelters, established communities, developed new jobs, and began to trade. This will lead to our first city-states/civilizations next week. Each evening, students should finish the section notes in their notebook if they did not finish them in class or if they were absent. Spelling this week is a new list for everyone! We took our spelling tests at the end of last week, so all students will be exploring a new set of words and completing activities (word sort, speed sort, rainbow words, and ABC order). These activities should be completed at school each day, but some students may need to finish certain activities for homework. Spelling tests for these lists will take place next week. Upcoming dates:
Have a wonderful week! Ms. Kennell

This first quarter is flying by! Somehow, we are half way through September, with progress reports coming up rapidly! Please remember to be checking with your student each day about their homework assignments.
In math this week, we are finishing our beginning level work on area, as well as adding in perimeter. Students should all have access to CPM online, as well as the homework help. This week, we will also be taking a pre-test for our unit over LCM, GCF, and all operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. By the end of the week, students will be using "generic rectangles" to explore a relationship between area and multiplying whole numbers, which will lead into our unit. Students will receive grades this week for their number talk paper, exit tickets, and in class activities, as well as homework assignments (the current homework plan is: Monday - 2.2.2 Review Preview, Wednesday - 2.2.3 Review Preview, Thursday - area/perimeter worksheet). In social studies, we are finishing our first TCI lesson (Investigating the Past) and will complete the entire second lesson (Early Hominins). Students will be taking notes on the four early hominin groups, focusing on how early humans developed and changed over time, leading up to our earliest civilizations. Notes/work in their notebooks is being taken for a grade, with occasional homework assignments. In spelling, we received our second individualized list last week. We are working on a 5 day cycle, with test dates varying depending on our weeks. This week, students are completing word sorts, speed sorts, and rainbow words in their notebooks, and writing sentences with their spelling words on Google Classroom (each day = one grade on Q). Spelling tests will occur the end of the week (Green/Gold groups = Thursday, Purple group = Friday). Upcoming dates:
**If other dates come up before next week's update, I will add another post or send out a message using Classtag! If you have any questions, please let me know by commenting below or sending me an email! ([email protected]) Have a great week! We have already entered the first week of September! It's crazy how quickly things change around here! This week, your students are getting their chromebooks, getting their pictures taken, and signing up for Classcraft and Google classroom! Parents can join Classcraft, and we will have codes for this soon, but are trying to get the student accounts all corrected first before sending these home.
In math this week, we have started our CPM lessons. We have begun by diving into characteristics of whole numbers (things like factors, products, arrays, remainders, and searching for patterns in numbers). We have already finished Lesson 1.2.3 (homework was due Wednesday) and are working on Lesson 1.2.4 (part 1 homework due Friday, part 2 due next Tuesday). Next week, we will working on setting up our online accounts for CPM. In social studies, we are finishing our geography work and preparing for our test! We spent yesterday reviewing everything, today on climate zones, and will do one final latitude and longitude webquest tomorrow on the chromebooks. Students should be studying this material, as they will have a test over everything so far on Friday (all 6th graders). In spelling, we received our first individualized list this week. We will work on a 5 day cycle, with test dates varying depending on our weeks. This week, students made cards for their spelling words, completed a word sort in their notebooks, and will be completing speed sorts and rainbow words in their notebooks the rest of the week. We are currently look at a spelling test on Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Upcoming dates:
