We are down to our FINAL week of school! For this weekly update, I will include some information about the classwork that we're doing first, but the later part of this post will be entirely dedicated to end of year updates!
With this being the final week of school, most grades are updated, so please remind your student to check about missing work! All missing work must be turned in this week before the end of the day on Friday in order to count towards their grades. Grades are always changing, but the most up to date grades can be seen on Skyward/Q, which is accessible for all students and parents. As far as classwork this week, we have finished science, so all science grades are up to date and final, unless a student completes missing work. For math this week, students are completing a board game project! Besides missing work, this will be their last grade of the quarter. We'll be working on it during class time, but students may also need to work some at home. Important Updates to End the Year:
Thank you for your support this year and have a fantastic summer! Ms Kennell

The number of school days we have left this year is down to single digits! As we work hard to finish out the year on a high note, please remind your student to check about missing work! Some grades have dropped lately and time is running out to raise those grades, so your student should be checking about late work and possibly corrections to raise those grades! Grades are always changing, but the most up to date grades can be seen on Skyward/Q, which is accessible for all students and parents.
As a reminder, if your student is absent, we will still be updating the 6th grade website daily. Even though we are back in person 5 days a week, that information is helpful for absent students, as well as parents, since it lists what we are working on in class and what students have for homework each night. If students are at home due to an illness or because they have to quarantine, they should use the website, then Google classroom. Emails can be answered as soon as possible, with video calls set up after school if requested. In science this week, we will be finishing our Oceans and Climate unit. In this unit, we'll focus on the effects of changes in latitude, temperature, wind, the Coriolis effect, and density on regional climate. This week, our specific focus will be heat, along with our final decision about if it's possible for two cities to have the same latitude but different climates. If students still have any late work for this quarter, it needs to be completed ASAP! In math this week, we are finishing Chapter 6! On Monday, we completed Lesson 6.2.3 (Naming Perimeters of Algebra Tiles), along with a review of area from last week. On Tuesday, we will be working on Lesson 6.2.4 (Combining Like Terms), along with an exit ticket at the end of class. Then on Wednesday, we will complete the final lesson of the chapter, Lesson 6.2.5 (Evaluating Variable Expressions). On Thursday, we will wrap up the chapter with a review packet in class, which students should finish for homework if they do not complete it in class. Next week will focus on some review of our entire year in 6th grade math! We have made the switch back to paper homework, so you should be seeing your student completing paper assignments on any night that they have math homework (listed below and on the 6th grade website). Thank you for your continued support and have a wonderful week! Ms Kennell I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day weekend! The countdown for the end of the year has started and our students (and teachers) are ready for summer! As we work hard to finish out the year on a high note, please remind your student to check about missing work! Some grades have dropped lately and time is running out to raise those grades, so your student should be checking about late work and possibly corrections to raise those grades! In this unit, we'll focus on the effects of changes in latitude, temperature, wind, the Coriolis effect, and density on regional climate. For the next few weeks, we'll be completing Lesson 2: The Make. In this lesson, students will be working to determine whether it's possible for two cities at the same latitude to have different climates. This lesson will be dividing in six parts, of which we'll cover 1-2 parts each week. Over these six parts, students will investigate the impact that latitude, ocean currents, heat, and geography have on a region's climate. This week, our specific focus will be geography. If students still have any late work for this quarter, it needs to be completed ASAP! In math this week, we are continuing on with Chapter 6, with a brief pause midweek to complete our last round of AIMSweb benchmark testing. On Monday and Tuesday, we are working on Lesson 6.2.1 (Order of Operations), which is going to take us two days, with the homework coming Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, we will pause for benchmark testing, but will use any remaining class time to get a jump start on our next lesson and reviewing expressions. Then on Thursday, we will review area of a rectangle and look at how we calculate area/perimeter when we have unknown side lengths, using a new manipulative called algebra tiles. They will have the 6.2.2 Review Preview for homework then that night. Next week will focus on completing our work with writing and evaluating expressions. We have made the switch back to paper homework, so you should be seeing your student completing paper assignments on any night that they have math homework (listed below and on the 6th grade website). In math this week, we are continuing on with Chapter 6, with a brief review of rounding/place value first. On Monday, Ms Kennell was out, but students worked on a variety of rounding/place value review by completing two Khan Academy assignments, a mystery picture Google form, a paper, and some task cards. For homework, they had 6.1.3 Part 2 Review Preview on paper. On Tuesday, we will start Lesson 6.1.4 (Solving Problems Involving Division), completing about half of the lesson and the homework. On Wednesday, we will finish Lesson 6.1.4, but will not have a new homework assignment. Then on Thursday, we will review order of operations by completing an escape room and completing 6.2.1 Part 1 Review Preview assignment. Next week will focus on order of operations and expressions. We have made the switch back to paper homework, so if you know you are going to be gone for an extended period of time, make sure you reach out and let Ms Kennell know so that we can make other arrangements for the homework. You should be seeing your student completing paper assignments on any night that they have math homework (listed below and on the 6th grade website). Math homework for this week:
Thank you for your continued support and have a wonderful week! Ms Kennell I hope everyone enjoyed their extra day with their student! As we head into a four day week, the final week of April, and the second half of Quarter 4, please remind your student to check about missing work, especially if they are in a sport!
**Progress Reports for Quarter 4 will be going home on Tuesday. Now is a great time to check in on grades if you haven't yet this quarter! As a reminder, grades are always changing, so the most up to date grades can be seen on Skyward/Q. You should have access as a parent and your student also has access! In math this week, we are moving on to CPM Chapter 6, which focuses on dividing and building expressions. On Tuesday, we will look at vocabulary and standards for the chapter, as well as completing Lesson 6.1.1 (Dividing). On Wednesday, we will go over what it means to divide by completing Lesson 6.1.2 (Fractions as Division Problems). Then on Thursday, we will focus in with Lesson 6.1.3 (Problem Solving with Division). The final division lesson (for this chapter anyway) will be completed next week. We are also going to be making the switch back to paper homework. Previously, students had a choice to complete CPM assignments as Jamboards or on paper. In the last chapter, over half of the students were choosing paper again, so I will no longer be making Jamboards for the homework assignments (though we will continue to use them for lessons). This means you should be seeing your student completing paper assignments on any night that they have math homework (listed below and on the 6th grade website). Math homework for this week:
Thank you for your continued support and have a fantastic short week! Ms Kennell Weather is a strange thing, with warm weather turning into snow before hopefully getting warm again! As we continue with Quarter 4, please remind your student to check about missing work, especially if they are in a sport!
**IAR testing is this week (state testing)!!! Please help us out by making sure your student is fully rested and has a fully charged chromebook! Our official testing is taking place April 19th-21st (Monday-Wednesday). It is very important that students are at school (on time!) for those days! Thanks! As a reminder, if your student is absent, we will still be updating the 6th grade website daily. In math this week, we are completing our IAR testing Monday-Wednesday, before reviewing mean, median, mode, and range on Thursday. We'll complete an escape room in class and then have a review worksheet for homework that night. We will then start Chapter 6 next week. With testing this week, we decided not to each a normal core subject in the afternoons. Instead, we are doing a short Greek mythology unit! Monday we completed a crash course on major gods/goddesses, Tuesday will be spent looking at the myth of Hercules/Heracles and deciding if he's a hero or not, and Wednesday we'll end our mini-unit with the Disney movie version of Hercules, which we'll compare to the myth. We will also complete our vocabulary notes for the unit and take a vocabulary quiz on Quizizz. If students still have any late work for this quarter, it needs to be completed ASAP! In math this week, we are wrapping up chapter 5. On Monday, we completed CPM Lesson 5.3.4 (Area of Trapezoids), looking at how we can turn trapezoids into parallelograms, so our area formula is similar, with the height being the main difference. On Tuesday, we will be completing our Ch 5 test in class, as well as answering some statistics questions in a Google form. Wednesday, we will be spending a quick day going over mean, median, mode, and range, working through some notes/problems together, as well as some questions based on the data from our Google form. On Thursday, Ms Kennell will be out for a meeting, so students will be working through some practice IAR problems on paper with their teams, with the possibility to earn some prizes! Math homework for this week:
Thank you for your continued support and have a fantastic week! Ms Kennell Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend! As we continue with Quarter 4, please remind your student to check about missing work, especially if they are in a sport!

Students will be using their work with weather and fronts to try to forecast the weather for a selected area. For this week, we will finish the weather report visual (step 4 on Mosa Mack) and take the unit test. Any old weather work should be completed as soon as possible. In math this week, we are working on completing chapter 5. On Monday, we completed CPM Lesson 5.3.2 (Area of Parallelograms), looking at how we can turn parallelograms into rectangles, so our area formula is the same (bxh). On Tuesday, we will be looking at the IAR practice test, trying out some of the problems and reviewing the features. Wednesday we will work on CPM Lesson 5.3.3 (Area of Triangles), exploring how two triangles can make up a rectangle, so the formula is 1/2(bxh) OR (bxh)/2. On Thursday, Ms Kennell will be out for a math meeting, so students will be completing the chapter 5 review packet with the substitute. We will finish the remaining math lesson for chapter 5 on Monday (5.3.4 - Area of Trapezoids) before taking our Ch 5 math test on Tuesday. The remaining time before IAR testing will be spent reviewing mean, median, mode, and range, as well as reviewing other content. Math homework for this week:

In math this week, we are doing a little bit of review first before continuing with the last part of Chapter 5. On Monday, we reviewed multiplying and dividing decimals and completed an escape room, which is completely digital. On Tuesday, we will review ratios by completing a ratio escape room, which is also completely digital. Wednesday will be spent reviewing how to find area and rearranging shapes so that we can find the area easier (CPM Lesson 5.3.1 - Rearranging Areas). Wednesday we will be using a Jamboard and a resource page, though students working from home can still complete the lesson. Wednesday will have an additional homework assignment (5.3.1 Review Preview, Jamboard or paper). Then on Thursday, we'll be working on science, since it will be the final day of the week. There is no school on Friday (Good Friday). Next week, we'll finish up the remaining lessons in chapter 5, which continue to focus on area of non-rectangular shapes. Math homework for this week:
Thank you for your continued support and have a fantastic week! Ms Kennell First week of Quarter 4, first week of 5 days in person, and last week before Spring Break!3/16/2021 It is a busy week!! Quarter 4 kicked off with our first week of 5 days in person, and it's our final week before Spring Break. Report cards for Quarter 3 will be sent home this Friday. Our current work will be going on Quarter 4 grades, so please remind your student to check about missing work, especially if they are in a sport!
Our Read-A-Thon has ended, but donations can still be accepted for a couple more days. If your student received donations in their honor, they will be able to cash in a small portion for prizes online. Those prizes must be chosen before the end of spring break. Students who signed up for the Read-A-Thon have earned a PJ day for Friday and students who logged at least 300 minutes of reading will get a cafeteria cookie too! We also had a goal of 30 positive office referrals on the intermediate side of the building before the end of the quarter, which we met! For meeting that goal, the students have earned an ice cream and movie party, which we'll be doing Friday afternoon in 6th grade. As a reminder, if your student is absent, we will still be updating the 6th grade website daily. Even though we are back in person 5 days a week, that information is helpful for absent students, as well as parents, since it lists what we are working on in class and what students have for homework each night. In science this week, we will be taking a short break before ending our Weather unit after spring break. Our Friday will look a little different this week due to the ice cream/movie reward. After spring break, we will finish our unit by completing Lesson 3: The Engineer. Students will be using their work with weather and fronts to try to forecast the weather for a selected area. After, we'll take the unit test before moving on to our next unit! Any old weather work should be completed as soon as possible. In math this week, we are finishing the first part of Chapter 5 before heading off for spring break. On Monday, we used our background knowledge on generic rectangles and multiplying fractions to figure out two ways to multiply mixed numbers (which can also be used to multiply decimals). On Tuesday, we took some notes on multiplying decimals and then practiced with a Quizizz assignment. Wednesday will be spent completing notes on dividing decimals and a practice on Quizizz. Then on Thursday, we'll be completing a team quiz before playing a decimal operation game! After break, we'll move into the final part of chapter 5, which focuses on area of non-rectangular shapes.
