Today, as we remembered the attacks on September 11, 2001, we took some time to discuss the events and a moment of silence for those who lost their lives. In Social Studies, we paused our discussion on Early Humans (Pre-Historic Eras, gender roles, and lifestyles) to focus on the 9/11 attacks. In 2001, I was a fifth grade student, so just a year younger than my current students. At the time, I remember the solemness of the situation, as we spent the entire day watching the news coverage of the events in New York. We took some time today to learn what happened and had some great discussions related to the events, as well as the hope that comes after a major tragedy.
In Spelling, we have been reviewing consonants, vowels, long and short vowels, and been practicing sorting words based on their vowels sounds. As we continue with spelling, students will soon be sorted into groups for more personalized word lists and activities. In Math last week, we focused on working well in our teams as we started our online curriculum, CPM (links to the ebook and homework help site are in the website links). Our lesson last week focused on how to find area, as well as reviewing some skills from 5th grade. This week, we will continue to review area, as well as perimeter, and mix those in with our daily number talks. Reading and math intervention groups officially start this week! Students will be getting their groups tomorrow, with content focus coming later this week or beginning of next. AR ranges and goals will also be given out this week. Since AR is no longer a grade, it will not show up in the gradebook, but students who meet their goal by the end of the quarter will be able to participate in a celebration (I think I heard the words 'staff vs student whiffle ball' being used recently...). As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to send me a message, email, or voicemail! It's going to be a great week!
